BMW’s RT has been around since 1979 and has since defined what a sport touring bike should and can be. In 2014, the bike was completely redesigned to offer loyalists and newcomers a motorcycle that rivals no other in the tour bike department.
The new R1200 R is powered by a 1170cc liquid cooled (water cooled in this case), twin cylinder boxer engine. This is essentially the same engine as in the dual sport R1200 GS model, but this one has different gearing in its six-speeds and BMW claims it gets an impressive 125 horsepower. This bike has some pretty impressive torque for those wide-open roads and handles twists and curves beautifully.
The R1200 RT has three riding modes: Road, Rain and Dynamic which can be easily accessed for quick changes on the road. All three modes work in tandem with the ABS (Antilock Braking System), ASC (Automatic Stability Control), engine control and the Telelever/Paralever suspension.
This bike is aesthetically pleasing with the classic lines and design that has endeared it to its many loyal riders. It is ergonomically well-thought out and provides a perfect upright riding position as well as a comfortable handlebar and grip placement for pleasant extended riding days. Even taller riders find this bike comfortable.
It also comes standard with heated grips and seat, which is great for early mornings or long rides into the sunset. The detachable saddlebags provide plenty of storage and a 6.6-gallon gas tank makes long trips easy and worry-free. The windshield is electrically adjustable as well, so keeping the elements at bay when it is fully up or enjoying a little wind in your face when the weather is good are easy options. The R1200 RT is also a common choice for the California Highway Patrol, which can be beneficial when riding up on cars that may get out of your way a bit quicker!
