Once again, Moto Guzzi is catering to the U.S. market and more specifically, the West Coast with this model. Born in the Italian Alps, the California Touring bike keeps its tasteful design while appealing to the big bike market traditionally dominated by Harley-Davidson here in the States.
While a 1400cc (1380, to be precise) V-Twin engine isn’t terribly large by American standards, it is unusually so in Europe, so already we can see where Moto Guzzi is heading. In addition, the bike sports an impressive front rake, obviously taking inspiration from the American chopper craze. At thirty-eight degrees, it sets itself apart even from Harley’s chopper-esque Breakout model, which tops out at thirty-five. Surprisingly, though, the California’s profile doesn’t scream “chopper” because of its beefy make-up. It’s a solid, well-appointed bike in a class of its own, thanks to its Italian roots and style.
The California is a heavy bike at 743 pounds, but because of its low center of gravity can be managed quite easily by most riders. Brembo calipers on the rear brakes as well as the dual front brakes combined with ABS makes sure that the California’s bulk is brought to a safe and swift stop when required. Add a six-speed transmission and a single disc clutch and handling the California is a breeze.
The California also features a Ride by Wire throttle that allows the rider to choose between three riding modes: Touring, Sport and Rain. In addition, the bike is perfectly suited for touring with a nice-sized windshield, large, roomy saddlebags, cruise control, both engine and saddlebag guards and clean instrumentation.
This beautiful cruiser is road-ready and able to compete with its American competition. The California Touring bike is a perfect balance of luxury, comfort, reliability and power.
