The Bonneville is a post-war production motorcycle that was first manufactured in 1959 by Triumph Engineering in England. In its initial incarnation, it was a 650cc parallel-twin and was based on Triumph’s Tiger T110.
The Bonneville is relatively new to American consumers, reaching our shores just a few years ago, but it was preceded by its reputation as a solid and retro-style bobber that harkened back to the 1950s and 1960s and conjured up images of too cool guys with rolled-up Levi’s, a white t-shirt with a pack of Marlboros in the sleeve and slicked-back ducktail hair. In 2017, Cycle Worldmagazine named the Bonneville Bobber “Best Cruiser” noting its lean styling, versatile, liquid-cooled engine and excellent handling.
The Bonneville is one of Triumph’s most popular models, but the company realized that if they wanted to increase their presence in the U.S., they’d need to step it up both in the performance and style categories. For style improvements, Triumph looked to the past, creating a darker and more muscular bobber that kept the original’s 1950s inspired cut-down aesthetics. Triumph didn’t overlook much in the detail department when upgrading the Bonneville. The T120 has retro beauty and style that includes machined engine fins, deep chrome multi-piece badges, grab rail, wheel rims and twin-skinned chrome exhaust headers; pea-shooter style silencers and iconic sculpted tank for a very authentic 1960s look and feel. Modern touches like an under-the-seat USB charging socket bring this timeless classic into the 21stcentury.
Suspension for the T120 is provided by 41mm KYB cartridge forks in front and twin shocks in the rear with adjustable preload. The brakes, too, have been improved from a single front disc to dual rotors and two-piston Nissin calipers with standard ABS. In addition, the T120 has an LCD multi-functional instrument pack, standard heated grips, trip computer, traction control status, ride-by-wire technology, two riding modes (Road and Rain), analogue speedometer and tachometer and an adjustable riding position as well as several other features.
The Bonneville T120 is a powerful, yet easy to manage bike and will appeal to all types of riders with its 31-inch seat height and cutting-edge technology not to mention the retro, stripped down bobber style. This stunning motorcycle is best suited for the solo rider that enjoys going out on short rides both in the city and out on the open roads, but can comfortably accommodate a passenger. With improved fuel economy (13% over previous incarnations), you’ll spend more time in the saddle and less time filling up.
