Featured Rental Bike: 2019 Indian Chieftain

Indian Chieftain 2019

The Chieftain is regarded by riders as well as admirers of form as a top-notch motorcycle.  Indian’s newer bikes are universally easy to handle, smooth and nimble despite looking so substantial.

The Chieftain has beautiful styling that harkens back to the 1950s style big bikes and takes its cue from steamliner trains of the same era.  For the 2019 model, Indian adapted several changes in both styling and technology.

Styling changes include a redesigned faring with LED lighting and new fork guards, bullet-shaped LED turn signals, locking saddlebags with color-matched fender closeouts, a newly designed, slightly lower seat and new badging on both the gas tank and saddlebags.

Technical improvements like offering the rider three riding modes (Tour, Standard and Sport) and a rear cylinder deactivation mode that helps keep the large engine cool while idling.  Sixteen-inch floorboards and fatter handgrips add the improved performance and control.

For such a large-looking bike, the 1811 cc Chieftain is easy to handle, comfortable and responsive.  With a seat height of 25.6” and slim saddle, it is easy to get both feet on the ground despite a wet weight of 822 lbs.  The bike has an electronic ignition, throttle-by-wire, six-speed transmission, cruise control, ABS-assisted brakes and a wet, multi-plate clutch.

The Chieftain is made for touring and offers riders many in-the-saddle comforts and conveniences such as easy to engage cruise control, an electronically adjustable windshield and a powerful, 100-watt audio system that can be used with an AM/FM receiver, Bluetooth or USB port for optimal access to your music library.  Add a 7” touchscreen display and keyless ignition and you’re road-ready.

The Indian Chieftain will turn heads wherever it goes, and it is the perfect bike for the open roads of southern California.  Despite its hefty styling, the bike is remarkably manageable due to its slim, low seat and center of gravity, wide floorboards, a tight rake and short wheelbase.  Make no mistake-despite its ease of handling, this bike is powerful and raring to go, which makes it compatible with cruising backroads and remote highways.
