Moto Guzzi has been working on a new adventure bike for some time now. Because the costs to bring the Stelvio, the company’s original adventure bike, up to Euro4 standards would be far too excessive, Moto Guzzi opted to simply develop a brand-new bike.
The manufacturer debuted the V85 in 2017 at the EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show. At the time, the prototype received a lot of attention and was thus put into production. In fact, Moto Guzzi had previously competed with a similar bike, the V65 Baja, at the Paris-Daker Rally in 1985. The “TT” designation on the new V85 stands for Tutto Terreno, which translates to “all terrain”.
The manufacturer released several details about the much-anticipated V85, which was available worldwide in 2019. The new engine is an air-cooled 850cc, 90-degree transverse v-twin hooked to a shaft drive puts out an impressive 80 horsepower and will reach the majority of its toque at 3750 rpm. In addition, Moto Guzzi claims that this new engine is the first that will “easily” reach 8000 rpm. A new, semi-dry crankcase has a scavenging oil pump, allowing the engine to keep cool without the necessity of an oil cooler.
The V85 offers riders three riding modes: Road, which will have medium MGCT traction control and ABS engaged on both wheels and what is referred to as a “prompt” throttle response; Rain will have a high level of throttle control and ABS active on both wheels with gentle throttle response and Off-Road with a low level of traction control, ABS only on the front wheel (which can be disengaged) and gentle throttle response with increased engine braking.
The V85 will have a monoshock attached to the right side of the swingarm and allow the rider to adjust both the shock preload and hydraulic rebound on the fork and shock. With 6.7 inches of total wheel travel and 8.2 inches of ground clearance, off-road riders will feel confident taking on several different types of terrain. The steel trellis frame is also new and lighter, bringing the dry weight of the V85 in at just 458 lbs., but is also stiffer Add a seat height of 32.7 inches and a 5.5-gallon capacity tank and you’re ready to take to the open road in style, safety (brakes are handled by Brembo both up front and in the rear) and comfort. A beautiful, full color TFT dash shows fuel level, speed, revs, gear, temperature and cruise control settings and houses the bike’s Bluetooth multimedia system.
In terms of the styling, the V85 comes in two color schemes: a striking white, yellow and red, which is reminiscent of the 1980s rally raids and a more subdued, but beautiful grey. A dual front headlight with an eagle-shaped daytime running light, high front mudguard and a fuel tank designed to replicate the set up for the African rally raids round out the aesthetics. A full line of parts and accessories, including very large and sturdy luggage, will be offered to enhance the adventure touring experience.
